Simplify Dynamics GP Financial Reporting

Simplify Dynamics GP Financial Reporting | Knights of GP
Dynamics GP has a long runway ahead, which makes reporting one of the smartest places to invest. Vivid Reports shares six principles for faster, less manual month-end reporting that all happen inside GP.

Microsoft Dynamics GP has a long runway ahead. Microsoft is continuing support through December 31, 2029, with security updates through April 30, 2031, per Microsoft’s lifecycle documentation, and the Knights of GP community has formed to carry support, enhancements, and payroll tax updates well beyond that. For the many finance teams planning to stay on GP for years to come, the platform is stable, the team knows it well, and the community around it is active.

Staying is the straightforward part. The question worth asking is which parts of the finance workflow still take more effort than they should. For most GP teams, financial reporting sits near the top of that list. Reporting is also one of the most improvable areas, and the improvement happens entirely within GP.

How GP reporting gets hard

Many GP teams build their financial statements in Management Reporter, or FRx before it. It does the job, and for years it has been the default. Teams also run into its limits. A common pattern looks like this: export the report out of Management Reporter, then rebuild it in Excel manually to get the format, subtotals, and detail leadership actually wants to see. By the time the monthly package is ready, a controller may have spent several days exporting balances, refreshing links, and reformatting statements before anyone has looked at what the numbers mean.

Over time, the reporting logic ends up spread across dozens of spreadsheets and files. Change one account or one calculation, and someone updates every file that references it. The work is slow, it is easy to get wrong, and it grows as the business grows. The friction comes from those spreadsheets sitting disconnected from the source data in GP, so every reporting cycle starts with moving numbers around manually.

Why now is a good time to invest in GP reporting

With Microsoft support running to 2029, security updates to 2031, and the Knights of GP community committed to carrying the platform further, GP is a stable foundation to build on. That stability changes the math on reporting. A team that once hesitated to invest in its GP reporting, unsure how long the platform would be around, now has a clear multi-year runway to work with. Improvements made today have years to pay back, and every month spent on manual reporting in the meantime is time the team does not get back. Treating GP as a long-term home makes strengthening the reporting around it an easy decision.

Practical ways to strengthen reporting on GP

For teams committed to GP, a few principles make monthly reporting far less manual, and none of them involve changing your ERP.

    • Keep your reporting logic in one place. When account definitions and calculations live in a single managed layer instead of inside each spreadsheet, a change made once flows through every report. That removes the file-by-file updates that consume the most time.
    • Connect Excel directly to GP. Excel is where finance teams are most comfortable, and there is no reason to give it up. Keep Excel and have it pull live from GP, so reports refresh each period instead of being rebuilt from a fresh export.
    • Preserve drill-down. A summary number is only as useful as your ability to see what sits behind it. Moving from a figure on a statement down to the general ledger detail keeps reviews fast and answers questions in the moment.
    • Consolidate multiple entities in one place. Organizations running several GP entities spend real time combining them manually. Rolling them into one set of reports removes a recurring monthly task.
    • Standardize the report package. When every entity and period uses the same templates, month-end becomes a refresh rather than a rebuild, and a new team member comes up to speed faster.
    • Keep budgeting in the same environment. When budgeting sits alongside reporting rather than in a separate silo, actuals and budgets stay aligned without extra reconciliation.

The payoff compounds

Strengthening reporting pays off in every close that follows. Each cycle is faster, the numbers are more trustworthy, and the team spends less of the month assembling reports and more of it interpreting them for the business. For a team planning to run GP for years, that gain repeats month after month, and the reporting foundation only gets more valuable the longer it is in place.

A perspective from Vivid Reports

Vivid Reports is a member of the Knights of GP, and financial reporting on GP is what we work on every day. Our view is a simple one: GP finance teams can modernize the reporting, budgeting, and consolidation they rely on without leaving the platform, and doing so is one of the highest-return projects a controller can take on. Whatever tools a team chooses, the principles above hold.

Dynamics GP is not going anywhere for the teams that want to stay, and the community is working to keep it that way. Reporting is where many of those teams can win back the most time, and the place to start is the next monthly close.
